The Founder's Personal Words

"One day in the early 2002, while I was sitting at the lobby lounge of Carlton Hotel Singapore, sipping my cup of coffee, I observed a waitress busily cleaning the tables and rearranging the flowers and sugar bowls, striving to keep the empty lounge looking neat and welcoming. I was extremely impressed, sparking off the realization that no hotel would be able to function without its rank and file.

A firm believer in quality – be it in the publishing industry, or as an employer, I felt called to fete these dedicated men and women with an award series which focused on outstanding personalities and excellence from all quarters. I was aware that existing awards had never acknowledged their efforts.

Hence, it was only natural that the newly conceptualized awards be named after Hospitality Asia, as the publication has already established itself as a respected voice of the industry. I chose Platinum, the most valuable of materials, to reflect their value. This was how the awards series was aptly named Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards. And to top it all off, only an Oscar-style Awards Presentation and Gala Charity Dinner would do justice to the efforts put in by the exemplary nominees. And, it was also fitting that the winners would hold their titles for a two-year duration, which would allow HAPA to present a Singapore and Malaysia series respectively. Then in 2008, I decided to expand the awards series to a regional platform focusing on countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, thus making HAPA every three years once with the HAPA Malaysia coming first, followed by HAPA Singapore and then HAPA Regional. The year 2011 will see additional participation from booming nations like The Philippines and Vietnam." - JENNIFER ONG

A dynamic entrepreneur in her own right, Jennifer Ong remains as hands-on and as committed to the business as the day she started it over a decade ago. Passionate about establishing note-worthy service standards and business integrity, Ong introduced WAP Asia Group's very own HAPA (Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards) to the hospitality industry back in 2002. Always driven by her endless enthusiasm and passion, Ong is determined and positive that HAPA would, in the long term, help to raise the standards and expectations, and not forgetting guest service, of the entire hospitality industry within the country and beyond.

 

HAPA (Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards) recognizes and rewards the crème de la crème of the hospitality industry at all levels. Focusing on the people who strive ceaselessly to give guests a hospitality experience bar none, this signature soiree has become a much-anticipated event for hoteliers as well as businesses who work with the hospitality industry. Dedicated to recognizing and rewarding personalities and establishments who have shown drive, dedication and passion for the hospitality industry, HAPA award categories are as diverse as the industry it serves, with Personality awards dedicated to service excellence and leadership, to categories ranging from the best experiences to be had in travel, golf, spa, food and entertainment. The Oscars of Hospitality is held annually, with Malaysia and Singapore taking it in turn to host the event.

The strong interest that other ASEAN countries have shown for HAPA has also resulted in the expansion of the awards with the advent of the regional HAPA, which will now see service operators vying for top place from amongst players in the region, as opposed to only country-specific competition. The regional HAPA will ensure only the best contenders from each country will be striving against the cream of the crop from the region for the ultimate recognition, thus raising the bar for both the industry as well as individual operators.

HAPA's Mission In Giving Back To The Community

As much as HAPA's primary belief is about giving recognition to its' nominees, HAPA is also very dedicated in its mission in giving back to the community through its charitable projects for the underprivileged, especially children. The Founder of HAPA has always had a personal soft spot for this cause and this is precisely why HAPA is used as a platform to reach out to these underprivileged ones. Besides raising funds and contributions in kind for selected charitable organizations, HAPA has a direct and interpersonal involvement with the underprivileged groups; either by ensuring that the children's wish list is fulfilled or even providing them with opportunities to showcase their talents at the HAPA Gala Dinner. Some of the charity organizations that HAPA has worked with in the previous years include Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah, World Vision Singapore, The Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation, Tunku Nurul Hayati's Children Trust Fund and the cancer children from the Paediatric Oncology Ward, Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya.

 

The HAPA Committee has established a Board to direct and supervise the management of HAPA’s affairs. The Board of Directors’ role is to effectively represent and promote the HAPA branding with a view to adding long-term value to the awards program. The Board will also assist in establishing policies for strengthening the performance of HAPA and ensuring that the branding adheres to great values and high standards of ethics.

Cheong Hai Poh is a highly accomplished and result-driven executive with more than 19 years of F&B experience and numerous accolades. As President of the Food and Beverage Managers’ Association (FBMA), Singapore and Chairperson of Hospitality Alliance Singapore, Hai Poh has contributed successfully to the growth of the association. He is also one of the pioneers in the formation of the Hospitality Alliance Singapore.
